Feb 06/06: India Buying More Wheat From Farmers

India's government expects to buy 16.2 million MT of wheat from farmers in 2006-07, up from purchases of 14.785 MT in 2005-06. Most of the wheat is expected to come from the Punjab, where government buyers are expected to procure 8.5 million MT, followed by 4.5 million in Haryana and 2.5 million in Uttar Pradesh. The 2006=07 marketign year begisn April 1.
This preliminary estimate emerged at a meeting of Food Secretaries of the main wheat procuring states held here today by Shri R.N. Das, Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution. The meeting besides taking an estimate of wheat procurement also discussed matters relating to procurement of coarse grains, setting up of control rooms and purchase centres in various states, purchase of gunny bags etc.
The Food Corporation of India and State Government agencies have made necessary arrangements for smooth procurement operation on minimum support price during the marketing season, which is to commence in most of the States on April 1, this year.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Das underlined the need for decentralized procurement by States to the extent possible and to ensure adequate storages facilities in the procurement regions before the start of procurement operations.
